When multiple knee injuries caused Tyson Evans to step away from basketball in high school, he turned to making YouTube skits and vlogs in his free time. After joining his school’s broadcast team, Evans soon discovered a passion for video production that led him to the mass communication program at the University of Montevallo.
“I wanted to do film or television, so I was eyeing schools in Atlanta,” Evans said. “But I had a tour at UM, and the communication from the Admissions Office and people constantly checking in made it seem people here really cared about me. Rather than me just being a number on campus, they wanted to welcome me into their community.”
Evans, from Tuscaloosa, is a senior majoring in mass communication with a concentration in broadcast production and a minor in digital filmmaking. In 2022, he started his own production company, TE14 Productions, LLC, where he creates web series and short films that have won awards and gained film festival recognition.
“I want to take my company to the level where I’m able to produce major motion pictures and television shows for streaming platforms,” Evans said. “Just being able to create content on that scale is the end goal for me.”
Without the help of his scholarships, Evans most likely would not have been able to afford college. He is a recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship, the Academic Excellence Scholarship, the Montevallo MADE Scholarship, the Gossom Scholarship in Mass Communication and the Dean’s Strong Hall Production Crew Scholarship.
On campus, Evans is a resident assistant in New Hall, a member of the Broadcast Education Association Club, the videographer for Purple Side and one of the main producers and student directors for the mass communication production crew. He served as the head producer for the 2024 College Night livestream, which was converted into a dynamic live show this year with alumni interviews intercut with the festivities.
“All of my peers and professors have been so helpful,” Evans said. “They’ve always shown up for me and having that support and being able to collaborate and make connections really affirmed for me that I belong at Montevallo.”
