James Billings has been an adjunct instructor for the Department of Communication since 2019, teaching COMS 101. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Journalism/Public Relations from Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., in 1986. He received his Master of Arts in Strategic Communication and Leadership from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J., in 2009.
He served in the U.S. Army for more than 30 years, retiring in 2015. As a public affairs officer, he developed strategic communication plans for the U.S. Army Reserve and was a Pentagon speechwriter. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Staff Identification Badge, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
In addition to teaching, James is active in the community. He is a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12185 in Alabaster. He is also a member of Alabaster First United Methodist Church, where he sings in the chancel choir. James has acted in several shows with South City Theatre, where he serves on the board of directors.
A “Montevallo Dad,” James and his wife, Stephanie, live in Alabaster. They have five children and three dogs.
